Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura Fuerteventura, is only 84 km from the African coast, and with a total area of 1,731 square kilometres, it is the second largest of the Canary Isles. Because of their location in the Atlantic, the climate of the Canary Isles (islands of eternal spring) is dominated by the regular north-eastern trade wind and the warm Canary stream. These two factors have a compensatory effect that ensures springlike temperatures the whole year round. Fuerteventura - the name probably comes from "fuerte" = strong, and "viento" = wind. It is these often extremely strong off-shore winds that particularly attract wind-surfers. There is plenty for beach lovers, too, with more than 50 kilometres of sandy beach. The two largest holiday centres on Fuerteventura are the JandÌa peninsula in the south, and Corralejo in the north. Every year in August, the world speed-surfing championship is held in Fuerteventura. With optimum weather, wind and water conditions, the possibilities for Sport on Fuerteventura are virtually unlimited. Lobos The volcanic island of Lobos, only approx. 6 square kilometres in area, lies off the north eastern coast of Fuerteventura. A day trip from the harbour of Corralejo is particularly worthwhile for walkers and nature lovers. You can walk right round the island in around 2-3 hours. From the old lighthouse on the island's northern tip, you will have a beautiful view of the bays around the Punta de Papagayo of Lanzarote.
